SCORE Mentors: A Catalyst for Clarity
This month I utilized the SCORE Mentors program to help me work through an expansion of my business. I wanted help thinking through some ideas and then clarifying possible tier options. On February 2nd, I started the process by entering my zip code on the website and completed a short questionnaire. I was contacted by a volunteer who sent me dates and times for the first meeting. The first meeting was scheduled the same week I submitted the request—remarkable for a free service.
I met with two mentors from the San Luis Obispo area via Zoom. When I submitted the request, I noted that a video conference was easier for me—I could fit in a mentor meeting between client work and meetings. The first meeting lasted an hour. I discussed what I currently do and the services I offer. Then, I expressed my passion for expanding my business, the exact target audience, and why. We talked about options. They mentioned having employees, but I leaned toward simplicity instead. Then they suggested two clever options—related but at different levels—and I was thrilled with these suggestions! They weren’t something I’d thought of, and I conveyed my appreciation.

At the end of the first meeting, there was an offer to meet again and complete some homework for that next meeting. We set a date for three weeks, and the mentors provided brief notes and homework discussed. I was energized and ready to take on the assignments! For the next three weeks, I tackled each assignment, though I struggled and got a little frustrated. Most of the work was completed on the weekends—I was hoping to have time during the week, but there weren’t enough hours in the days. As the second meeting approached, I was worried I didn’t have enough work done.
The day of the second meeting, I had all my notes and assignments ready. I discussed the research I conducted and the conclusion I drew from one assignment. For the next, I finalized the two specific groups in the target audience I want to provide services to. I mentioned an opportunity to collaborate with other spouses I’ve networked with. For the third assignment, I reviewed the services being offered in the package. The mentors helped guide me to the realization that the value I have in this package is myself, my experiences, and my knowledge. I mentioned a bonus service—gathering all clients I provide this to for networking and to share challenges or successes—and they suggested this be a small paid add-on. At the end of the meeting, I was provided words of encouragement: this is a good service with value, and I’m nearly ready to launch this. The perfectionist in me said no way, I still have things to work out. But they mentioned it’s easy to get stuck in the details—launch, gather feedback, and adjust. I have a homework assignment to complete before we determine if another meeting is necessary.
After going into this meeting worried, I was proud of myself as we closed—maybe because of the work I put into it. With SCORE, you get what you put into it; the mentor’s support depends on you doing the work, and I am grateful for their guidance as I push forward. I would love to hear from other business owners. Have you used SCORE Mentors? What was your experience like?
