Living a Legendary Life Standard: Leading with Conscious Impact as We Transition
In the teachings of Dr. Jon Porman and Vince Lindenmeyer, Ph.D. , living a “Legendary Life Standard” means striving for excellence in every action, while being a “Conscious Impact Leader” involves intentional choices that leave a positive ripple long after you’re gone. As our military family prepares to close this 23-year chapter, we’re drawing on these principles, determined to exit active duty not just with honors, but with a lasting legacy of mentorship, wellness, and service.
My husband enlisted in 1994, swearing an oath to defend our nation. His career has spanned far beyond the Navy: countless joint billets alongside other branches, and an international NATO assignment collaborating with allies from multiple countries. At every station, he’s been more than a leader; he’s been a mentor who genuinely invests in people. His office door and personal phone number have always been open, shared freely with his teams. He makes it a priority to understand family resources, like when he connected with me with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) staff in Norfolk during my volunteer days there. He learned alongside me how NMCRS provides financial assistance and education, and to this day, he shares that knowledge, and the knowledge of other organizations, with those who need it.
What sets him apart is his holistic care: professional excellence paired with personal concern. He’s compiled countless award applications for his teams, celebrating their achievements as if they were his own. Beyond the workplace, he builds bonds through shared sweat. He’s run with base running groups, lifted weights alongside teammates, and even competed with them. If we’re not connected on social media, you might have missed my posts about his team’s participation in Guardian Arena III, a mental and physical competition wrapped around space. He returned Friday as the oldest participant and the only Navy contender, then laced up Saturday for a 10-mile race. Physical fitness isn’t just a habit for him; it’s a lifeline for managing stress, complemented by daily meditation. By living this example, he mentors others, fosters connections outside duty hours, and inspires resilience in those around him.

My own path reflects this same commitment to conscious impact. Years ago, I joined a dedicated group of military spouses fighting residency challenges with a grassroots effort that culminated in the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (MSRRA). As part of the coalition that pushed until it became law, I’ve seen firsthand how persistent advocacy creates enduring change for families nationwide. Volunteering over 1,400 hours with NMCRS allowed me to deliver financial education and direct assistance to active-duty members and retirees. As Operations Director for a nonprofit, we developed tools and resources that supported more than 1,800 active-duty service members, veterans, and spouses in entrepreneurial ventures.

These experiences fuel the work I do today: tailored consulting, administrative support, and mentorship for military spouse and veteran entrepreneurs. It’s about paying forward the support we’ve received, turning challenges into opportunities for others.

On a personal level, I prioritize wellness to sustain this impact. Three days a week, I resistance train with weights and bands; on others, I flow through Qigong and the eight brocades for stretching and balance. Daily meditation, scripture readings, prayer, and walks pushing past 10,000 steps keeps me grounded. Clean eating, with minimal processed foods, nourishes body and mind. And whenever possible, I volunteer, finding joy in giving back to the community that has carried us.
As we approach retirement, embracing a Legendary Life Standard and Conscious Impact Leadership feels like the perfect compass. It’s not about grand gestures, but consistent choices, mentoring with open hearts, leading through example, prioritizing holistic health, and serving with purpose. Our military journey has taught us that true legacy lies in the lives we uplift along the way, and we’re committed to carrying that forward into whatever comes next.
