With the household goods packed and in storage, all personal possessions fitting in our one temporary room, and Arizona sunshine replacing California rain, the reality of this new chapter has settled in. My husband no longer reports to a command. Just us, choosing what’s next. In the last week, I’ve been reflecting on what it truly means to build a legacy of intentional impact through the everyday choices that ripple outward long after the uniform comes off.

I reflect on the role of spiritual intelligence, the capacity to draw on inner wisdom, values, compassion, and meaning to navigate life at any moment. It’s the quiet strength that helps make sense of sacrifice, find purpose in uncertainty, and lead with integrity even when no one is watching. For my husband, it showed up in his human-centered presence: open doors, real conversations with teams, mentoring through challenges, and showing up consistently, from Guardian Arena competitions (as the oldest participant) to connecting people with resources like the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. These were actions grounded in a sense of higher purpose that built trust, resilience, and growth in others.

I’ve seen it in my own path, from rallying thousands to help pass the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act, to serving as Operations Director for the Military Spouse Business Association (a 501(c)(6) nonprofit that was an online marketing platform that connected military spouse and Veteran entrepreneurs) and helping launch the Military Spouse Business Academy (a 501(c)(3) foundation that provided incubators, expert Q&A, and resources on business moves), to volunteering thousands of hours in financial education, to turning repeated employment frustrations (especially overseas under SOFA restrictions) into my own consulting business and Homefront Hustle, a mentorship program empowering military spouses and veteran entrepreneurs with their business. Spiritual intelligence builds strength and allows us to act with compassion, maintain inner peace amid chaos, and create change that endures.

The transition itself has been the most powerful teacher. The final week of reporting blended everyday tasks: client calls, mover chaos, and a sleeping bag in an echoing, barren house with profound closure: the last uniform morning captured in photos, keys surrendered after the inspection, and a rainy drive that cleared into Arizona sunshine at the border. We arrived at my parents’ home, unpacked, and began shaping new routines, always with Plan A, B, C (and sometimes D) ready. Flexibility has been a staple. 

Even now, as my husband continues the Veterans Evaluation Services process for his disability claim, two appointments completed, a third scheduled in ten days, and the fourth still to come, spiritual intelligence guides the waiting. It reminds us that patience, trust in the process, and focusing on purpose helps sustain us through uncertainty.

What I’ve learned is that legacy isn’t reserved for active duty. It’s built in the quiet, intentional choices we make now:

• Leading with emotional intelligence and compassion—investing in people long after the mission ends.
• Turning challenges into purpose—using deployment hardships, unemployment battles, and PCS uncertainty to mentor others.
• Embracing continuous reinvention—resting, resetting, and building something meaningful, like Homefront Hustle, where mentees find confidence for their own ventures.
• Choosing purpose over comfort—fostering community impact through advocacy, mentorship, and authentic support.

We’re just at the start of this phase. My husband’s legacy lives in the sailors and joint service members he shaped; mine grows through every spouse who finds the strength to build their own path. Together, we’re living proof that post-military reinvention is possible and powerful when rooted in spiritual intelligence and intention.
