Offices on the Road – The Reality of Running a Business Operations Consulting Practice While Traveling
After a month and a half of travel — including our recent family trip to Boston — I’ve been sitting with how much the idea of an “office” has changed for me over the years.
From the car, family rooms, porches/decks, camps, resorts, and now my desk here in our Florida home, the work hasn’t stopped. Client projects kept moving. Volunteer priorities advanced too. Client projects kept moving forward. Homefront Hustle mentorship calls happened right on schedule. Deliverables were completed and sent.

This isn’t because I have some superhuman ability to work through chaos. It’s because of the portable, resilient systems I’ve learned to build, the very same systems I now help my clients create every day.
Military life prepared me well for this. With 16 PCS moves and 24 years as a Navy spouse, I learned early that rigid plans fall apart quickly. What lasts are clear workflows, documented processes, and tools that travel with you. Asana keeps tasks, deadlines, and team communication aligned no matter where I am. Clockify helps me track time without the constant mental load. Google Workspace makes real-time collaboration possible even when I’m in a different time zone. And the deep adaptability that comes from years of figuring it out on the move fills in the gaps when the unexpected happens.
I remember the early days in Belgium, where I faced unemployment, self-doubt, and the challenge of what to do. Those experiences, along with the many moves before and after, taught me that operational excellence isn’t about having a fancy office. It’s about having systems that work anywhere.
My clients: small business founders, veteran-owned businesses, and nonprofits – gain that same freedom. They can focus on growth, strategy, innovation, and mission impact while the operational backbone stays solid through travel, family commitments, or whatever life throws their way. I help them move from feeling overwhelmed by admin and processes to having reliable structure that supports their goals.
I’m grateful for the trust they place in me, especially during this season of our own family transition after Nathan’s retirement. I’m grateful for the lessons too. And I’m especially excited to bring even more value after recently receiving my WOSB (Women-Owned Small Business) certification from the SBA. It’s another way I can better support and connect with businesses that need reliable operations partnership.

Looking back, this portable approach has been shaped by every chapter, the overseas challenges, the volunteer roles that kept me grounded, the mentorship work with military spouses, and the systems I’ve refined while supporting multiple clients. None of it would be possible without the foundation of resilience built through military life.
If you’re a founder or nonprofit leader who feels like things are slipping through the cracks during busy seasons, family commitments, or big life transitions, I’d love to help you build systems that actually work in real life, not just on paper.
I still have one opening for new Business Operations Consulting clients this summer and would be honored to support more leaders who are ready to create structure that lasts.
