From Referrals to Sustainable Growth: My First Steps in Business Expansion
My husband’s retirement date is June 1st, and that brings a new focus to building a sustainable career and maybe even the primary source of income for a short period of time. My Business Operations Consulting services have been fortunate to grow through referrals. As I shared in Article 2, “Referrals Lead to Business at Home“, clients came in the first year with no need for paid marketing or advertising. Even this past month, I received two new referrals. The pace has slowed recently, which has allowed for better balance, but I want to expand intentionally so this can become our main income stream.
With military spouse unemployment at 23% (Blue Star Families, 2024 Military Family Lifestyle Survey), creating a portable, reliable career is more important during this transition. I have decided to take the first small step toward growth, starting with the website. I recently signed a one-month contract with a team to optimize search engine visibility of the website through better keywords. I know that the website isn’t going to be the sole source of new clients, but I lack the time and expertise needed to handle this myself. As one Entrepreneur article explains, “By optimizing their website and content for search engines, small businesses can improve their search rankings, attract more targeted traffic and, ultimately, drive more sales.” I will be tracking metrics before and after to evaluate results before committing to anything longer-term.
One ongoing concern is capacity. If marketing efforts bring an influx of potential clients, I want to serve them well or refer them thoughtfully. I am not ready to hire employees yet; pricing adjustments and tax implications make that a significant step. In California, the distinction between employees and independent contractors is governed by strict rules under AB 5, which can trigger additional payroll taxes, workers’ compensation, and compliance requirements depending on how the relationship is classified. If any future team members are remote or multi-state, payroll tax obligations can become even more complex due to varying state rules for withholding, unemployment insurance, and nexus. For now, I am building a referral network of consultants I trust. I am looking for others in business operations consulting or virtual/executive assistant services who share my commitment to tailored, personalized service, strong work ethic, genuine passion, and reliability; people who do the work, stay committed, and deliver with integrity. If that describes you, let’s connect. I welcome the opportunity to learn about your business so we can support each other and help clients find the right fit.
This expansion is about more than income; it is about creating stability and freedom as we step fully into this new chapter. With no military orders guiding our next move, Business Operations Consulting can take center stage. I am approaching this with the same intentional choices that have guided our transition: small steps, measurable progress, and community support.
