3 Essential Tools Every Mobile Founder Needs (Especially Military Spouses)

As a military spouse for 24 years with 16 moves behind me, and now transitioning from active-duty military life to veteran family life as my husband, Nathan, retired, I’ve learned one thing the hard way: your business tools need to be as portable as you are.

When we were preparing for our move to Florida, I analyzed the systems that have kept my own businesses running smoothly through transitions. Whether you’re a founder, a nonprofit leader, or a military spouse building something from home, having the right tools can make the difference between constant stress and sustainable growth.

Here are three tools that have made the biggest impact for me, and both my Business Operations Consulting clients and Homefront Hustle mentees:

1. Asana – Project & Task Management

One of the hardest parts of running a business during a military move is keeping track of everything when your environment is constantly changing. Asana has been my go-to for the last couple of years.

I use it to create boards for each client, set deadlines, assign tasks, and track progress no matter where I’m working from. For military spouses who might be packing one week and setting up in a new home the next, having everything cloud-based and accessible from any device is invaluable.

I’ve helped both consulting clients and Homefront Hustle mentees set up their own Asana workspaces, and the feedback is the same: they have something that helps keep them organized.

2. Clockify – Time Tracking & Invoicing

If you’re a consultant, virtual assistant, or service-based business owner, knowing exactly how you spend your time is critical. Clockify makes it simple to track hours, create reports, and generate professional invoices.

This tool has been especially helpful for me as I balance client work with running Homefront Hustle. It removes the guesswork when it comes to billing and helps me stay profitable even during busy PCS seasons.

When I share Clockify reports and invoicing with my clients, some of them choose to implement the tool for themselves.

3. Givebutter – For Nonprofits & Mission-Driven Businesses

For organizations that rely on donations and community support, Givebutter has been a game-changer. It combines donation processing, email and newsletter communication, donor tagging, and fundraising campaigns all in one easy-to-use platform.

I’ve helped several nonprofits implement Givebutter, and they’ve seen immediate improvements in donor engagement. Instead of juggling multiple tools, everything lives in one place, which is especially important for small teams with limited time and resources.

These three tools have helped me run my businesses smoothly through moves, and they’ve been valuable recommendations for my consulting clients and Homefront Hustle mentees. But tools are only part of the equation. The real magic happens when you combine the right technology with solid systems, clear processes, and ongoing support.

That’s exactly what I help my Business Operations Consulting clients build. Whether you need help implementing these tools, creating workflows, improving compliance, or getting your back office organized, I tailor everything to your specific needs and lifestyle.

If you’re ready to launch or grow your own business with personalized guidance, Homefront Hustle, a 13-week one-on-one mentorship/coaching, is open for new mentees, and it is FREE. I would love to help you build something sustainable that can move with you.

If you’re a founder or nonprofit leader who feels overwhelmed by operations, I currently have one opening for a new consulting client. I’d love to help you create systems that give you more time and peace of mind, even when life throws a move or busy season your way.
