Retirement Realities: Turning Frustration into Resilience as a Military Spouse

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to write this, but I believe it’s important to share—so that fellow military spouses who have been on this journey for a while don’t feel alone. I also want to reach out to newer spouses and anyone navigating career shifts, relocations, or life transitions.. The emotional journey of retirement is much like the emotional cycle of deployment. I’m sharing this chart because it names something we don’t always talk about—anger. And because I don’t just want to talk about the struggle—I want to share solutions. That’s why I created Homefront Hustle—a program designed for military spouses and anyone ready to build a flexible, portable career—and right now it’s FREE for a limited time.

I’ve been open about my career struggles, being underemployed or unemployed; Employment Challenges as a Military Spouse Abroad: My Experience in Belgium, Flexible Work for Military Spouses, and My Career Journey and Program Experiences. One of the things that fueled my perseverance through the military’s impact on my career is the lack of consistent career support. A military spouse unemployment rate of 23% is simply unacceptable (Blue Star Families Military Lifestyle Survey 2024). And I know the reality is even harsher for military spouses overseas, where SOFA and NATO SOFA restrictions can block even more entrepreneurial ventures.

My edge came from channeling frustration into action, turning “why me?” moments into “watch me” perseverance. Over 23 years, I’ve navigated 15 moves that shattered job continuity, but each setback built resilience—like pivoting to entrepreneurship after Belgium’s restrictions left me unemployed. I didn’t let anger win; I used it to advocate for the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (MSRRA) and to launch Homefront Hustle, mentoring military spouses and others navigating career transitions to build portable businesses that defy the system’s barriers. It’s about reclaiming control, one step at a time, and emerging stronger—both during active duty life and through the transition into retirement.

I want to talk to you—new military spouses and those preparing for transition, and anyone who’s ever felt their career take a back seat to life’s constant changes. I’m looking at you, the spouses who want independence and who want to feel like contributing members of society. Are you a self-starter? Do you want to be your own boss? Do you want to set your own schedule? How about setting your worth?

I would love for you to consider Homefront Hustle as a viable career path—or entrepreneurship in general—so you can persevere in military life, career transitions, or any season of change. If Homefront Hustle isn’t the right fit for you, I can connect you with other entrepreneurial options.

Here’s the value I bring: through my own experience with both traditional jobs and entrepreneurial ventures, I’ll share the tips and tricks that have helped me build my current business. I want to help you succeed, so you can be independent and carve out a career of your own—maybe even avoid the frustration of unemployment. Homefront Hustle is my answer for those who value their own time and worth. It’s 13 weeks of one-on-one mentorship, empowering you to launch virtual assistant or consulting gigs from home—no more uprooted dreams, no matter where you are in the journey.

For new spouses, this is your wake-up call: the military’s rhythm of constant relocations can crush careers if you’re not proactive. As a veteran spouse and friend once put it, life in this world is “Semper Gumby”—Always Flexible. But you can be the boss: start small, set your hours, earn what you deserve. My path from frustration to founding Homefront Hustle proves it—independent-minded spouses, this is your edge for perseverance and resilience, whether on active duty or beyond.

As we near retirement, I’m excited for what’s next. I want to help you build a successful career that survives relocations and transitions. Reach out to me to talk about how Homefront Hustle can support you—whether you’re a military spouse, a veteran, or simply someone ready to take control of their career. And here’s the kicker—Homefront Hustle is FREE for a limited time. No strings, just 13 weeks of one-on-one mentorship designed to help you launch, grow, and take control of your future. If it’s not the right fit, no worries—I’ll connect you with other entrepreneurial resources so you can keep moving forward.
